Cross town cross talk

A Cubs/Sox camp? That's not a fantasy, it's a nightmare. Former Cub "greats" Les Lancaster and Todd Hollandsworth? Sox "greats" Steve Trout and Ron Kittle? You kidding me? Why not Gary Varsho? Where's Kevin Orie? Lamar Hoyt will be there. Be fun to slip him a 'lude and see what happens.

Okay, so Dempster is a Cub for four more years. I'm okay with that because he's only 31. I know he seems to be older because he's been around a while, but I think he's hitting his stride. Many starters hit their prime in their early thirties -- he works hard -- he might be a good investment. BUT -- I read that getting Dempster officially takes us off the Peavy board, and I think that's a mistake. ONE MORE ARM is what we need. Peavy, Lowe...whoever it is...do the deal. That will put us over the top in '09.

Team states that LH bat is now the priority. Also has said they'd like to trade Fukudome. Guess what? No takers. I hear we are talking to the Royals about Mark Teahen. Let's look at his numbers: He's 27, which is good. He hit .255 last year with 15 hrs, 31 doubles and a paltry 59 rbi in 149 games. OBP of .313. with 131 whiffs. Can play OF, 1b and some 3b. It sounds like he's a left handed, not as good, Mark DeRosa. Remind me why we'd want him? Oh, right, he bats from the left side. So does Ken Griffey, Jr. Go get him for one year and wait to fill right field in 2010 with either a Fukudome who has learned to hit or another free agent.

Or you go with Pie and Fukudome. Period. And hope for the best. Defense in the OF (at least 70% of it -- would be spectacular and the pitchers would appreciate that.) They both bat left and have speed -- teach them to bunt and play little ball. Ah, nevermind. It wouldn't work.

Thoughts on a potential Randy Johnson signing? Other than the complexion competition with Trammell? I'd still rather have Peavy. Even if it depletes the farm. Speaking of farms, where will Jim Edmonds play in '09? You know, we could just re-sign him and let him play RF. Just saying. He hits lefty and is better defensively that Ibanez, Abrea or Dunn. Or Peehat. Or whatever his name is.

That's it for now. I'm off to Canada later today, so posts may drop off for a day or two. Here's what you do. Go back and read some old ones. Kind of like a "best of Shermrants." It'll have to do.

Peehat. You see Smitty...thats why shermrants gets all the traffic. It's the humor. At 4:13AM no less. I am not too excited about what has transpired so far this hot stove. Peavy would have been the difference maker. The Dempster signing gives us nothing we didn't already have. I don't know who we trade to KC for Peehat, but assume it has to be someone without a no trade clause...who would agree to go to that craptastic hell hole and lose 110 games a year?

I spent some time on godaddy.com yesterday, and bought up 15 different domain names...things like rakerblog.com, docraker.net, eyeglasspeddler.org, etc...so when Doc Mike decides to start his own blog, I will get rich selling him the domain rights to all of the URL's he wants. I am brilliant.

INSIDE SCOOP.

Kerry Wood is down in the dumps with the Cubs offer. He really wants to stay in Chicago. And is willing to accept a 1-2 year offer.

I knows peoples...

Kerry Wood has now publicly stated on no less than 47 talk radio shows that he wants to stay and will take a one year deal. I also read that in Sherm's totally awesome blog a couple of days ago.

You've been so scooped.

Boy, you need to get up pretty early to be the first post on this blog, 4;13-7:34AM, jeez.

Why isn't Hoffpauer in the conversation for a left handed bat? Why does the conversation only involve veterans with shitty numbers.

Where's Greg Luzinski and Richie Allen, could you imagine taking a punch from Richie Allen? Ralph can't go, he would return with his jaw wired shut. Don't forget BB Richards.

How about www.rakelikemike.com

This is what Doc Raker is talking about. Players want to play for the Cubs. Don't be surprised if the Cubs end up signing Kerry Wood on their favorable terms for an outstanding bullpen, trade for Peavy, move Fonzi to the 3 or 5 hole, lead off Theriot, hit Fonetnot second, move Dlee to CF, Hoffpauir at 1b, Willie Stargell in RF and win the World Series during a blizzard on 11/4/2009.

www.rakelikemike.com exists already. Unfortunately, it's a gay gardening website.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

What people don't realize about Hoffpauir is that he's almost 30. So, sure. Give him a chance, but hurry. And he plays outfield like that old guy at fantast camp. Oh, wait, they were all old. You know what I mean.

Besides, it won't be long and Hoffpauir will be "starring" at the Cubs/Sox crosstown camp. Worst part of that? Smitty will be there, too.

Mike Fontenot is no longer available. He went to Hometown Buffet with his family and Prince Fielder was there. Fielder ate him. Said later he "thought it was a crouton."

Time was I could come into the office, go make rounds, see a few people, and then be the second, sometimes the first to comment on the daily sherm. Actually this is more fun.

Several days ago I said Wood is not gone until he signs elsewhere. Still think he can stay. Happy noise that Demp stays, but not really a surprise. Peavy would be gravy, but not if he emptied our shelves of reserves. I still want to think Pie can be a bright part of Cub future, but he's out of options, and would not last as long as a Hollywood marriage on waiver wires. So, he will be in a deal for Peavey if one is done.

Randy Johnson would only be a good sign if he cost what would surely be an insult to him $3 Mill max. Otherwise, leave it alone. Don't forget that some one is Paying a big chunk of change to Jason Marquis next year, He likely won't be going to San Diego in any trade (unless we pay the entire tab).

The team as it is configured will win 90 games, so we all know what any additions really mean.

Amy and Keith are good people, but Arizona is the place you ought to be, as loyalty means something. And the guys we have met. Who among us actually thought you would some day hobnob with Billy Williams and Fergie when you were 10 years old? Been there....

I think there is a town in Canada named Peehat. It's 500 miles south of Titshelmut.

It's between Snatchcap and Scrote-Beret

Randy Johnson? Isn't Arizona still paying him $10M annualy indeferred salary? The guy is rickety, old and his knees are shot. He has been taking injections into his knees to keep pitching since before he was with the Yankees. Randy Johnson = Greg Maddux, a 4 to 5 inning pitcher with a 4.50 ERA. Now he may be good out of the bullpen at $800K a year.

Who brought up Jim Edmonds for RF, that is a good idea. Why is he off the radar, does he want to much $?

Anonymous said...

The Edmonds idea? Let's see. Who thought of that? Hmm. Oh yes, I remember...it was that genius Sherm -- the Wizard of Webworld!

Brilliant! Let's have a Guiness.

I was just looking at the Cubs schedule. They play in SD twice this year, once in May and again in July. We need to go to a game over by there.

Anonymous said...

I would strongly recommend PETCO PARK, if one wanted to see a game between the Padres and the Cubs. Another game that is merely "by there" would likely not be as satisfactory

All kinds of posts today!

Even on the Doc Rake and Doc Broken Hearts day off....

Smitty's blog is your place for in your face updates.

Smitty has a blog?

Yes, Petco Park and the Gas Lamp district have a very Wrigleyville feel to it. Of course Petco is no Wrigley but with the Gas Lamp entertainment district surrounding the park you can walk around and party down like back in Wrigleyville. Maybe we can see a Cubs Peavy vs Padre Prior matchup, although they play in May and I would expect Prior to go on the DL by April 15 at the latest.

Apparently the interweb tubes don't reach peehat, Canada, so we will have to continue with this rather long series of comments.

Not much new today, No Peavey, no Tea Hen, Never gonna have Texiera.
You know what the funniest day of the winter will be? The day Bobby Whackit (that's Howery for you mikey come latelys) gets a job offer. And a good one. He will, and it will be funny.
San Fran is ready to offer Sabathia Bonds like money. Problem is, it's unlikely to be in the neighborhood of the Yankees offer. The Brewers were set to offer all you can eat brats. Rumored cost of that for sabathia and the prince would tank brewers stock below zero.

Bobby Whackit = Latroy Hawkins and Hawkins has a job for 2009. Hell doesn't even Six Finger Charlie have a job? I should have pitched at camp, I would of gotten signed, raking off a pitching machine just wasn't enough to get Hendry's attention. Feeling Woods pain.

WOW, I wondered what happened to my daily 20 or so emails, you've all been hiding here in Sherm's world., blogging or banging, whatever you call it. The cubs need a lefty and you're right, what happened to Hoff, 4 dingers not enough, I mean he even got left off the playoff roster. Dempster says the chubs weren't ready for the playoffs, I don't know you already played 162, you can't get ready for a few more. He pissed Lou off, so much he's up here hawking autographs at some O'hare airport card show this weekend. You know, the economy and all. Talked to Lori yesterday, she's thinking of filing a protective order against Smitty, but I said a fantasy camp stalker would definitely be a case of first impression so she backed off. 20*F here fellas, first taste of snow two days ago, I live for Jan in AZ.
