What's a Phillie again?

Somebody tell the NL east that this isn't little league. We play more than seven innings.

Nice job Aramis. Thank you Dlee for not hitting into a double play. Bullpen was tight. Even Bobby was back on his game.

Comment: I thought Dempster pitched great for having a shitty outing, if that makes sense. Had less than his best, could have been pummeled for a dozen but kept us in the game. Good job.

Comment #2: I'm glad Reed Johnson got picked off and DeRosa struck out in the eighth. Why? So that Fontenot didn't have be lifted for a pinch hitter AGAIN after already homering in the inning. What the hell is Piniella thinking? Twice in the same season? Come on, Lou. The kid can hit. Lefties and righties. Quit yanking him in that situation. Fontenot has NINE homers. That's impressive.

I will be out of town for the rest of the weekend, so you will have to wait until Sunday night or Monday morning for your shermrant blog fix. Hopefully, we'll still be beating the Fillies each and every game. Tomorrow I expect Harden to shut them down.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone.

Key Stat

As in "Mar-Key" -- he didn't walk anyone. He put the ball in play. Quick, effective game. Nicely done. Gave most of the pen a rest. Perfect.

I didn't get to see the game, but it was a nice win. Coupled with a Brewer loss in St. Louis...we have a nice lead heading into the last 29 games. Most of those are with contenders, so we have to step it up and earn the division. We might not be able to coast into the playoffs, but sometimes it helps a team to maintain the intensity in the last month rather than "rest" and get out of their rhythm.

Phillies appear to be on a bit of a roll right now, but most of that was sweeping the Dodgers, and we are much better than the Dodgers. I still think our pitching will shut them down most, if not every, game in this series. Another potential "statement series" to the rest of the NL if we can win three or all four of these. It could be a playoff preview.

September call ups will be here soon. I'm looking forward to seeing more of Hoffpauir. Maybe Pie can give Fukudome some batting tips.

Not much more to add...except Go Cubs.

What was that, Dave?

I was speaking to Dave (aka Mojo) last night when the telephone cut off. Something about my...let's see, how exactly did I put it yesterday? Oh yes "Big game from Soto tonight. I can feel it." That was it. So anyway...you were saying? Something about a passed ball in the first inning, perhaps? Probably wasn't important. 7 rbis.

Things I really, really liked about that game -- comeback and "Soto's big night" notwithstanding -- Piniella tearing into Cedeno for the shit bunt. Although Brenly said that sometimes you have to remind these guys about the fundamentals...why not mention it BEFORE the at bat? Fine defensive play by Fontenot in the sixth. Theriot keeping the tag on Morgan's foot in the seventh. And the thing I liked best about yesterday's game? Marmol looked unhittable again. And Soriano's drop. I'm sorry. That was funny. Not at the time. But now.

What I didn't like? What's wrong with Zambrano? Doc Raker, in his non-blog, claims that it is fatigue and that he should miss a few starts. I don't think he looks fatigued to me. I think that ever since Rich Harden showed up, he's had to realistically digest that (along with the great year that Dempster is having) that he's the number three pitcher on the staff right now. Don't get me wrong. I think Z is a team guy all the way. I think he loves the winning and is happy for success of the other pitchers. I am not criticizing him at all. I just think he's human. He's trying to prove (mostly to himself) that he's a number one -- and therefore he's pressing. Trying to be too fine. Worrying too much about baserunners. Picking when he should be powering. And that, my loyal reader or two, is on Piniella and Rothschild to handle. Just like they (Lou and Perry) had their "talk" with Bailodome, they need to talk to Carlos. Reassure him. Tell him to relax, lighten up and have fun out there. He's tight assing is all it is. In golf, they call it the yips. Z gots the yips. Here's something else. Wrigley faithful need to give Carlos some big time love next outing...let him feed on it. I'm right, you know, even though I'm not an eye doctor. But I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. Not really. I prefer Marriott's. But, I digress.

Fontenot - 2 for 2 off the bench. It's critical that he be given his at bats.

Thank goodness Lee walked with the bases loaded. Was I the only one who saw that double play on the horizon?

Let's sweep the Pirates tonight. I really hope that Marquis can pitch as well as he has been WITHOUT that one "fall apart inning." Be helpful to the pen if he can go seven or more tonight. Anybody see a complete game coming?

No predictions tonight. I wore it out last night with Soto, but don't want to rub it in. If I had to pick anyone to break out tonight, it would be Lee.

Smitty called and he taped the Olympic ceremonies -- opening and closing -- and has been watching them nonstop. "Can't get enough." His words. He'll update his blog soon.

Much better

Nice team effort, and Lilly truly deserved to have a game like that. He's been better than his record indicates, which is amazing when you think about his lousy start.

Nice job Gerard Perry and Lou Piniella! Just "talking" to Fukudome has changed everything. Three more hits and four rbi's -- after they "suggested" that he shorten his swing? Wow. Impressive coaching. Now go "talk" to DLee about hitting homers. "Talk" to Marquis about throwing strikes. "Talk" to -- oh, nevermind. You get the point.

Jim Edmonds hit a triple. Bet you didn't see that one coming.

Let's talk postseason for a moment. I'm going to just assume that we make it. I also think (I agree with Charlie, now that I think about it) that Marquis gets left off the postseason roster. It'd be pretty scary to have to play us, wouldn't it? Uh, gee...who's pitching for the Cubs this series? Harden, Zambrano, Dempster, Lilly and then Harden again. And then Z. Yikes.

In terms of matchups -- the Dbacks series could be awesome. With Webb, Haren, Johnson, and Davis. But I like our chances. Mets? Santana, Pelfry, Pedo, and Maine. Pretty decent rotation just starting to come around. Phillies? I'm not seeing it. They're okay, but I think they get beaten by the teams with the better pitching. Dodgers? Not gonna make it. Brewers? Spahn and Sain and pray for rain. Sabathia, Sheets and pray for sleets? You get the point.

Versus the AL? Boston? Their pitching has been better in recent years, and the lineup is a lot less scary without Manny. Rays? Good, young team. Out of the playoffs fast. White Sox? Good team. Not good enough. Twins? Scary because they scrap. Good enough at just everything they do to win. We'd do well in their park, I think. Angels? Very good team. Fast and well managed. It would come down to pitching matchups, and I like our top four better than their top four.

We need to win our division. Just keep doing what we are doing. Win, but set up the rotation for the postseason. Continue to rest certain people from time to time to keep them sharp and fresh. And for God's sake, keep "talking" to players in slumps. Who knew talking could be so effective? Quick, someone go to Iowa and talk to Felix Pie.

I hope big Z keeps his hitting streak alive, but more important -- pitches a dominant game. We need that from him...every time out for the rest of this year.

Big game from Soto tonight. I can feel it.

Impressive

I don't know what was more impressive yesterday -- Rich Harden's seven innings, the Hawaiian little leaguers victory at the LLWS, or the big flying cheese wheels at the Olympic closing ceremonies. You'll have to forgive me, but I turned off the Olympic closing ceremonies about ten minutes in. I just don't care about that kind of stuff. I'm not big on ceremonies. Maybe after the WS this year I will be. Hope so.

Big deal. Fukudome hits a pinch hit homer. Guy comes in and somehow accidentally throws a fastball right onto the barrel of the "bailers" bat and suddenly he's fine? Even Brenley said that nothing had changed in the swing. The ball hit the bat. Unfortunate news for Fontenot, who will now sit for another week or two while Funkodome goes into his patented 1 for 14 run. Fontenot hit the ball for an opposite field double yesterday right on the screws, too. Why wasn't that a headline?

Pirates load the bases with none out yesterday in the top of the eleventh (or whatever) and could not score against G. Mota. How pathetic is that? Naturally, the Brewers came out and immediately scored the game winner after that to sweep the Pirates. Now we have to sweep the same stinking Pirates. Milwaukee moves on to play St. Mary's School for the Blind.

DeRosa is on a roll. He's a great guy. Great interview after the game. Ivy Leaguer. Okay, I'll say it. I'm so glad we didn't trade for Brian Roberts.

Marquis Marks: guy pitches great. Except for one inning every time out. What's that all about? He is pitching well...but he's pitching himself off the offseason roster. And possibly out of the starting rotation. He seems to be a good guy, too, and a good teammate. I would like to see him come around and quit falling apart once a game.

We get a second chance at Karstens today. No excuses this time to get shut down by this kid. Last time it was: "we'd never seen him" -- that won't work again today.

Personally, with or without DLee in the lineup, I like Aramis is the three spot. Lee hasn't been a bonafide 3 hitter since May.

Edmonds is slumping -- 0 for some time, but at least he's still patient. Gets a walk or two a game. Young guys need to learn from that. That said, he needs to drop in the order a little until the bat comes around. Seven might be a good spot for him for now. DeRosa can and should be hitting five while he's this hot.

Hoffpauir should hit fourth. Oh, wait. He's still in the minors. Another four hit game for him the other day.

The Felix Pie "era" was a short one.

Let's get Ted Lilly some run support tonight. He deserves it after his last outing.

Go Cubs.

Fuku update

0 for 3. 2 Strikeouts. 2 errors. Yikes. Someone tell me again why Fontenot is getting splinters in his ass?

Friday, August 22, 2008

Well?

When you see what Milwaukee did to Pittsburgh and the Cardinals did to the Atlanta, you'll realize how important it is to beat bad teams. We, on the other hand, get trashed by the Nationals -- by far the worst team in our league...and give up a game to both teams chasing us.

4 - 0 lead going into the sixth and we end up losing 13 - 5? That's pathetic. I don't even know who to blame. Marquis, who can't throw a strike with a lead? Gaudin? I mean, come on, it's the fucking Nationals, for crying out loud. Not a game we should lose, folks...and that's what scares me about this team. Now we have to fight and hope to win this series...not where we wanted to be after game one against the fucking Nationals. The Nationals, who now probably feel pretty darned good about themselves...and might just come out tomorrow smoking. This is the stretch that matters -- let's see how the Cubbies handle it.

Side note: DeRosa is a pretty damned good right fielder.

Second side note: based on side note one...Fontenot should start at second base almost every day.

Time to kick it into gear.

Dualing rants

This morning's blog is brought to you by the optimistic Sherm. There are two, you know. Sherms, I mean. The optimistic one, who is usually not allowed anywhere near the computer or the blog, and the other, cynical, skeptical Sherm. The one who does most of the talking and typing. Skeptical Sherm is getting coffee, so I thought I'd jump in and opine.

Yippee for us! We have a nice lead in the division and it's almost September. In my lifetime, I cannot remember being 29 games over .500. Ever. Wow. What a great season! It is so much fun to win games and listen to the Wrigley crowd sing. We are the toast of the national league! I can't even remember 1969, 1984, 1989 or even 2003. Distant, unrecallable memories of days past. It's all about now, baby, and we're gonna do it! I can feel it! The 2008 World Champs! Now that has a nice ring to it! What a team! Harden is great. Solid at every position. Best pitching staff ever assembled! What curse? This is it!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Don't listen to him. He's a moron. He's been stuffed back down into that place where raging optimists belong. The dark. Anyway, on with today's REAL rant.
Sure, it's nice to have a lead at this point. It beats the alternative. But there are no guarantees in
baseball. We have a very tough September -- much tougher than the teams looking up at us, and we still need to keep winning.
Here's a thought. From now on, with a run on first and no outs or one out? DLee should start sacrificing. He's the human double play. He's ground more balls than Chef Boyardee. And no one says this...but he's pressing big time. Guy jumps out of his cleats for any first pitch fastball with runners on base, regardless of location. Thus, pulls outside pitches right to the shortstop. DP. Here's a short note to DLee. Feel free to pass it on. Other hitters go the opposite way (that means hitting the ball to right, Smitty) to bust out of a slump. Earth to Derrek. You're in a slump, and have been since about early June.
You must score runs to win games. Racking up nine total against the Reds? Awful. Despite winning two of three. That should have been a sweep. With our pitching the last three games, there is no excuse at all for that not being a sweep. And sure, the company line is "Cubs win another series." Great. STILL SHOULD HAVE BEEN A SWEEP. Michael Phelps didn't "win the series" -- he won every race. No excuses. I'm still pissed for Ted Lilly.
Fukudome continues to play most every day, proving that the Japanese have something on Lou. Probably a massage parlor incident from his playing days or something. No reason that Stinkodome plays every day otherwise. Meanwhile, Fontenot...recently our hottest hitter, is allowed to sit on the bench and go cold. If you've been paying attention? You'd know that Fontenot, when allowed some regular at bats? ALWAYS gets hot and hits.
I'm still worried about the DBacks. Something about Brandon Webb and Dan Haren twice each in a short series. Toss in a Randy Johnson game or two, and they will be tough to beat. Especially if we are in our pitching only mode.
We're still short a power bat in the middle of the lineup. Not going to happen now, unless Micah Hoffpauir is the guy after the callups. And where will he play? Not first. Sally Lee is there. Right? Pictures, remember?
Okay, maybe I am obsessed with our flaws, and maybe it isn't fair. Tough shit. That's what I do.
Speaking of flaws. Have you seen Smitty's blog? Olympic updates? What the fuck is that? Guy is AWOL for two months and comes back with that?
Well, it's Friday morning, and getting late already, so I have work to do. Spam doesn't just send itself.
Giving it all back
I know, I know -- it's just one day, it's just one game. But I don't have to like it.
First of all, we give back all the good from the day before. That makes life easier for the teams chasing us, and I hate that.
Secondly, the Cub web site has a big article about the Cubs "Long stretch of games vs sub-500 teams" -- that's ignorant and has to fire up the competition. Why say publicly that we are playing a bunch of losers?
Third, this is what scares me about this team. They can go "bat silent" all at once. Against marginal pitching. That was Bronson Arroyo on the mound, not Steve Carlton in his prime...what happens in a short series against a team with a couple of good starters (DBacks, Brewers, etc?) -- and don't tell me that we own the Brewers because of that last series. If you think it will be easy to beat Sabathia twice in a short series...you are wrong.
It's a real shame to lose a game when Lilly pitched so well. If our pitchers start to think that they have to be perfect to win games (against shitty teams like the Reds) they will start to press. They're human. Gee, Ted...couldn't you have done better than 7 innings and 2 hits? C'mon.
So, unfortunately, we get back to back terrific pitching performances from Harden and Lilly -- and the results are nil. No change to the standings, except that there are two less games to play, and I suppose that's the only plus.
Today, we have Carlos Zambrano vs Josh Fogg. Hopefully we can Big Z at least two runs against the dominating Foggster. He's usually good for one himself.
Now THAT'S a good day
A nice win, well pitched and well played. Couple that with the Cards losing to the Pirates and the Astros spanking the Brewers, and you have a perfectly terrific Tuesday of baseball. Let's keep it up. We need to take care of our business and keep beating people. I really think we need to, and can, go 11 - 2 in these last 13 games of August.
As long as the Astros "think they can" -- let's hope they keep beating the Brewers. I really want to see the Brewers fall out of the playoff race. Late slide by them, someone else gets hot and gets in. CC Sabathia for the farm. For nothing. Sweet.
Fukudome had a late single and a couple of rbi's. Yippee. I'm not convinced yet that he's the guy (the bat) that we want (need) in the lineup every day.
Rich Harden is very impressive. Wow. I am starting to think he was worth Eric Patterson. (Who is hitting .125 with the A's -- which is higher than Murton was before they optioned him.) Billy Beane doesn't make many mistakes, but the early read on that trade is that the Cubs got the best of the deal.
As for my personal television viewing -- could we please get a little more Olympics and a little more Election coverage? I just am not getting enough of that.
Who's taller? Costas or Fontenot?
Keep pulling away, Cubbies...keep pulling away. (also Smitty's motto from camp, but that's another story)
Speaking of camp. Who's going in 2009? I am probably not.
Well...there is work to be done. If I think of anything worth adding, perhaps I'll add it. Perhaps not.
Thoughts for an off day
We have thirteen games to play this month -- and other than the Phillies they are all against sub-par teams this year. Reds, Nationals, Pirates and then the Phils. It's probably unrealistic to expect to run the month, but we should win at least 7 of 9 from those first three and then at least split with the Phils -- making us minimally 9 of 13 for the rest of this month. I'd prefer, and it is completely possible -- to see us go 11 or 12 wins of the 13. The Brewers only play ten more this month -- Astros, Pirates, Cards (for 2 games) and the Pirates again, so we shouldn't expect them to fold. They'll likely win 7 or 8 of the ten. Astros are still playing like they could be last year's Rockies and no has told them otherwise. Well, I'm telling them otherwise, but let's hope they don't give up until after the Brewer series. If we can actually spread our lead in the remaining part of this month, we will be in a very good place with September coming, because our last four series are not easy. Check it out. Brewers, Cards, Mets, Brewers are our last 13 games. Be nice to go into that with a seven or eight game lead, ya know?
Harden pitches today, so naturally I won't get to see it. I don't think I've ever actually SEEN him pitch.
Fukudome is starting and batting second, fifth and seventh. "Until I say otherwise" said Lou Piniella, last seen wearing a kimono while walking around the clubhouse saying "who the emporer? me the emporer!"
Memo to Ryan Theriot's base stealing wannabe legs: FASTER
Olympic beach volleyball. Wow.
Remember when we liked Bob Costas?
Nice to see that Smitty has returned. Or has he? That wasn't much of a post. Not very Smitteriffic.
Note to cb (the littlest Jim Edmonds fan) -- hang in there. We're all rooting for you. Miracles happen everyday.
Genesis
What was the line from Genesis? In the big inning? Seems that we have had a few of those this year. Nice road trip. Five of six works. Should have, could have swept.
Here's the rant:
Kosuke is the Japanese word for rally killer. This guy does not deserve to be playing right now. I'm sorry, Kosuke fans, and don't tell me to be patient. I'm right. Stinkodome needs to spend some time on the bench. At least agree with me on one thing -- he should NEVER EVER hit fifth. The guy, when he plays, should bat eighth. Period. Until he shows that he can once again hit major league pitching. I am tired of weak whiffs with runners on base.
Why am I so adamant about this? Because we have better options. If we didn't, I'd say leave him out there and let him work through it. Here's the deal. Against right handed pitchers, Fontenot should play second base. Every time. DeRosa or Reed Johnson in right field would be fine with me. Edmonds in center. Give Slappodome a start every now and again.
Against lefties? No question. Johnson in center, DeRosa in right. Play Cedeno at second. Or Fontenot. Or, Edmonds in center (he can left lefties) Johnson in right and DeRosa at second. Lou just needs to do this. I know it won't be popular with all our new Japanese baseball fans, but the goal here is to field the team with the best chance to win each and every game, and Fontenot gives us a much better chance. If Fontenot bats fifth yesterday, we aren't without runs into the seventh. Tell KKKKKosuke "Domo Arrigato. Chakuseki." (Thank you very much. Now sit down.)
Dempster was tough yesterday. So was Marshall on Saturday. He deserved better.
Saturday's umpire took a wrong turn and we got the guy who was supposed to be in Williamsport for the weekend, where the strike zone is apparently ankles to eyes. Called Fontenot out a pitch that wasn't even close. Everything about the LLWS is tremendous except the umpires.
Nice to see the Brewers and Cards lose yesterday. I don't think the Brewers play anyone with a winning record the rest of the way (except us) -- so we need to keep on winning every series.
Props to Reed Johnson on a great game, and to Aramis for a quick return (and big double.)
Have a great week everyone!
Go Cubs.
Magic
Okay, it's still too early to toss around words like magic, but you have to like it when there are different heroes on different days. Yesterday, it was Daryl Ward. Had to feel good for him, since he's been struggling.
Big Z is not at his best right now, but we're picking him up -- which is great, because he'll come back strong (hopefully in the playoffs)
Need a solid outing from Marshall tonight, and I totally expect one. He's been good, and has the right attitude.
Who else can bat cleanup when Aramis is out? Theriot? Soriano won't, even though he should. Soto whiffs too much. Edmonds is the choice.
I probably have more to say...but don't feel like spending my lazy Saturday morning typing. Have a great weekend...go Cubs.
Not much to rant about
Everything went pretty nicely yesterday -- it's always great to win both games of a double header.
Minor beefs:
The Beer league co-ed softball Padres rolling over for the Brewers. Why can't anyone hit Sabathia?
Rain cost us the "perfect" rotation. Marshall will now start Sunday, which is fine...but is Harden really that fragile? 5 and a third innings every fourth day. No variation?
I'm surprised Fontenot isn't getting more at bats. He's being sacrificed here for Fukudome. I'd like to see a little less Kosuke and a little more Fontenot for a while -- at least until KKKKKKosuke remembers how to hit. Yes, he did hit a soft liner in game two for a couple of runs. Congratulations. All of Japan can now rest.
Anybody see that Hoffpauir had a four homer game the other day? We need to get him in the line up, too. Can he play right field?
Let's finish off the Braves today. Need another good outing from Lilly...and then move on to take care of business v the Marlins. Go Cubs.
So...top three blog, eh? Which is better? the Jim Essian or this one? Which do you read first? That's what I want to know. Smitty didn't make the list? He updates his once a month, whether it needs it or not. Coming soon from Smitty -- "Cubs get Rich Harden from the A's"
js
Wednesday, August 13, 2008
I hate rain outs
Had yesterday all planned to knock off early and watch the game -- finally get to see Rich Harden pitch...blah blah blah. Rain out.
Need to win two today. Harden on eight days of rest can't say he's tired like he did after the last game he pitched (against Houston. He went less than six innings)
Why can't they play double headers back to back like they did when I was a kid? Twenty minutes in between games and go? Now they need three hours? Or is that "gate" driven? Probably the latter.
Milwaukee plays minor league teams the rest of the way, apparently.
$3500 golf clubs are an expensive way to find out that equipment isn't the problem.
If I'm Lou, I give Fukudome the entire day off and get Fontenot some at bats. Kid was hot as can be, and is now back to pinch hitting every now and again...which doesn't help him.
I'm impressed with the Minnesota Twins. Always in it. Quite a franchise. They do something right up there.
Here's what I really don't want to see. Red Sox - Dodgers in the World Series. That would be a Manny-fest of sickening degree. Ugh.
If it can't be the Cubs in the WS -- I want it to be the Twins and the Rays. Can you imagine the horror of the TV people? Viewership would be in the dozens.
More later. Or not.
The final third
Well...here it is -- the final third of the season.
Brewers are on a roll. Thanks to the Expos for rolling over. Nice series. I saw better pitching in the LLWS. We need to beat up on Atlanta. I think we have to win four of six on this road trip. Prefer 5 of 6, and sweeping both the Braves and Marlins would be another statement. I like the pitching set up...Harden, Marquis, Lilly in Atlanta, and then Z, Dempster and Harden again in Florida. Z needs a strong bounce back game after getting tagged by the Cards at home.
DBacks acquired Adam Dunn. Anyone think that puts them back ahead of the Dodgers for the west title? Or were they there anyway because of their pitching?
Speaking of Atlanta -- worst airport in America. I see that Mojo made it home safely from his Chicago excursion. His golf clubs are now being used in Newfoundland to club baby seals.
I fly United, myself.
Let's beat those Braves...
Beating the Cards
Is always a good thing. Nice series win.
Big Z had a rough outing...he'll bounce back.
Dempster was terrific, again. Nice game for him to win.
Fukudome in the 2 spot? Stupid. Come on, Lou. The guy needs to bat 8 every day until he starts hitting again. Or -- bench him and let Fontenot, Reed Johnson, and Cedeno split the extra at bats. At least those guys can hit American pitching. Nice catch in right last night. Joe Morgan said -- "at least he's not taking his slump into the field with him"
Here's what I think about that. We already have Felix Pie. A great fielder who can't hit. We didn't need to pay 48 Million $$$ for a guy who is ten years older and not as good a fielder as Pie. Fukudome is hitting about .100 since mid July. Hell, Pie could've hit .125, easy.
Never thought I'd say this, but way to go Aramis Ramirez for that hustle yesterday! Taking the extra base on the misplay in the second inning. Going to third on a fly to center. Going headfirst on the slide into home on DeRosa's sac fly. Nice to see. He is playing like he wants to win. Good job.
Time for a road trip. I think we need to sweep the Braves in Atlanta, and win 2 of 3 from the fish down in Miami. Have to start winning better on the road and this is a good trip to do it. Pitching is lined up nicely for the week.
Go Cubs. Have a nice flight mojo...have fun in Atlanta. (Who flies to Atlanta from Chicago to get back to LA?) Did you buy baby Cubbie gear?
Question
How will you know it's Mojo when he gets off the plane? He'll be the guy wearing the Jim Edmonds jersey.
Speaking of Mojo -- have fun at the White Sox game. Say hello to the gift horse for me.
Nice win...despite the aforementioned stupidity. If we can win stupid, we might just have a chance.
Are we the only team that can score on CD Sabathia? (CD is roman for 400, as in pounds, for those of you who don't know and thought that I might have committed an error.) Jeez, NL, man up and swing the bat already. Of course, he shut out the Expos yesterday, so no big deal.
Here's to another big win today. Here's to Jim Edmonds hitting fifth, no KK Fukkkkodome.
Go Cubs!
Friday, August 8, 2008
In game commentary
Stupid is as stupid does.
Stupid #1 -- batting Fukudome 5th. He can't protect Ramirez, and proves it with a weak at bat with two on in the first.
Stupid #2 -- Giving up a homer to Mather on an 0 - 2 count.
Stupid # 3 -- see stupid number 1. Leaves two more on. If Edmonds is hitting fifth? It's at least 3 -1 right now.
Stupid #4 -- letting Looper get through the heart of the order in the 6th with a six pitch inning. Their bullpen stinks...might not be a bad idea to try to get into it instead of swinging at everything in sight.
More as this game rolls on.
The Blog. Wednesday August 6.
So much to say. Letting it all hang out on this blog since rumor has it that Doc Raker might be making a reading appearance. Gee, golly, maybe he'll comment, too.
First things first. Mojo is going to Chicago tomorrow for a weekend of golf, baseball and beer. Sounds like fun, doesn't it? Well, that all depends on how he handles it. Because even though his wife set the trip up for him and "encouraged" him to go, we all know she's going to be pissed that he went. So, as a true friend and fellow Cubnation dweller, I want to offer the following incredibly wise advice.
1. Call her when it is most inconvenient for you. Maybe from Wrigley when the Cubs are batting. I am not joking. This is important. Don't call when it's easy. Call when it's not. Tell her that the game is nice and all, but that you couldn't stop thinking about her and the girls and wanted to hear her voice. Here comes the most important part -- so pay attention. When she says "I'll let you get back to your game" -- IT'S A TEST. DO NOT FALL FOR IT! You say "It's okay, I'd rather hear about your day" or some such thing. Trust me. You'll thank me later.
2. Only order food that she would hate while you are gone. If she asks you what you had and you say something that she would LOVE while she's home up to her elbows in baby poop and eating cheese sandwiches -- well, you get the picture...tell her you had the "insert something she hates" and that you didn't like it too much. It was (tough, undercooked, slimy, gross, prepared wrong -- pick one.)
And now back to our regularly scheduled blog.
Lost in today's spanking of the Asstro's was the absolutely shitty inning that Marquis had prior to the Cub outburst. It's so important to hold the other team after we have scored, but we seem to have trouble with that. Doc Garden Weasel wants to rail about Bobby Howry? What about Marquis? Three straight 92 mph fastballs to Carlos Lee? What was he thinking? What was Soto thinking? What was Rothschild thinking? SOMEONE has to be thinking. That's horrible. First he pitches around the fearsome Hunter Pence with two outs to get to Lance Berkman. Boom. Tie game. And then with an 0 - 2 count throws a third consecutive fastball to Lee? What? We've been grooving Lee all series. He's the only guy in that lineup you can honestly pitch around. Geoff Blum hits behind him. Remarkably lucky that we exploded and won today. Thank goodness that Backe was awful.
Bobby Howry. The guy goes through this from time to time. He's a hard thrower who depends on movement. Without the movement, well, he's hittable. He needs to pitch to get his stuff back, but I agree with Doc Lawnmower that he should not be pitching with the game on the line until he gets back whatever it is he's lost. Note to pitching coach -- it's your job to help him. Put down the slice and go work with him.
Fukudome had a couple of hits today. Big deal. I'm still not impressed. He's pressing like a same day dry cleaner, and it shows. Check this out. He won't take a pitch with two strikes. He's so worried about getting called out, that he is swinging at every pitch with two strikes. THAT'S the problem. Note to batting coach -- it's your job to help him. Put down the frosty malt and go work with him.
I watched the Blue Jays and Athletics tonight, because in Montreal the television choices suck. I'm watching the Yankees - Rangers now in French. That's how bad it is. Anyway, where do they find announcers willing to do Toronto games? These guys suck. Runners on second and third, no outs, late in the game and the guy says "they should bring in the runners in this situation." Umm, dumbass? The runners need to stay near the baseline.
Note to all baseball players. What's up with the Chinzilians?
Note to Mojo: Are you taking a sign to carry to Wrigley? Something to get you on TV? Maybe an "I "heart" Jim Edmonds" sign? Or maybe "Poo-holes can't spell"
Whatever. That's enough for one night. I have the last trois innings to watch.
Things that stand out
1. Fukudome 0 - 4. Again.
2. Soto. Big whiff in a big situation.
3. Pitching to Carlos Lee with first base open. What the f.........?
4. Soriano. Clutch. Whatever I might have said in the past, I take it all back.
5. What happened in the inning where we had runners on first and third and no out? I was at the airport...checking updates on the phone. First and third no out. Next thing I know, the Asshos are batting and we didn't score. What the f............?
6. Hershiser and Phillips made mention in the first inning of the first game that you just don't pitch to Carlos Lee with first base open. Even in the first inning. So why did we in the seventh? What the f...........?
7. Time to bash Mojo. I wouldn't go to a White Sux game unless they were playing the Cubs under any circumstances. What the f.........? I'd rather watch the Cubs on TV than two teams whose names are based on socks. Or hang out at one of the bars across from Wrigley. Consider Merkle's. The fact that first place Sox tickets cost $11 should not matter. Reconsider, man. You're sleep deprived. Think, Mojo, think.
Did you see the Brewers "brew" haha the other night? Rumor is that Parra said he was going to go to the clubhouse after he came out of the game for something to eat. Fielder went apeshit, said "ALL THE FOOD IS MINE" and tried to kick his ass. Crazy.
Yuk
Awful game last night for a number of reasons, not the least of which was the rain.
Why can't we hit that kind of pitcher? Guy with basically nothing. We swing at every first pitch, never go deep into the count and make him look like Tom Seaver. Unbelievable. That guy should never beat, let alone shut out, this team. Terrible offensive approach..
Fukudome looks worse and worse to me. He might be the weakest hitter I've ever seen at this point in his major league career. Bat him 8th or leave him on the bench. The patience is gone. He can't make contact with any breaking ball. I'd rather see DeRosa in RF everyday with Fontenot at 2b. He's had a few hits since the all star break...but nothing much, in my opinion, and in the clutch? He vanishes.
I like Orel Hershiser, but I am tired of hearing him say "when I was the pitching coach for the Texas Rangers -- we know, Orel. You've done two things. Pitch for the Dodgers and coach Texas. We get it.
Weather permitting, we play again today. I think we need to score at least one run to win. Thoughts?
Smitty sighting?
Last seen working at a gas station in Mississippi with Elvis Presley.
I'll take it
I'll take any series that we win...even if we should sweep teams like the Pirates.
Thanks to the Phillies and Braves for their wins yesterday...that helps.
I feel bad that Zambrano didn't get yesterday's win. Brenly said that Lou put the game "on cruise control" a little too soon. Great point. I might have let him go one more inning. I also might have let Samardzija go another inning or two since he's burnt for today anyhow.
Did you love the Reed Johnson homer or what?
The Astros have given us some trouble -- need to take it to them this time. Wolf shut out the Mets yesterday...but we won't see him or Oswalt this time. Dempster, Harden, Marquis in the series. We need to get Marquis some runs...he's pitching well enough to win most games.
I go to Montreal this week. Maybe I'll take in an Expo game. Oh wait. Nevermind.
Carla Wood should be ready for the Cardinal series this weekend. Mojo will be at that series. Watch for him in the stands. He'll be the guy with the "my twins are at home" look on his face.
By all accounts, the Brewers have the easiest next month or two of scheduling -- we need to put as much distance between us and them now.
Manny is wearing number 99. In LA. Who does he think he is? Wayne Gretsky? Trust me, I know Wayne Gretsky and he's no Wayne Gretsky.
Question for the day. Is Kosuke Fukudome worth the 48 mil that we (the Cubs) are paying him? There are several light hitting outfielders that we could have had for less. Your thoughts? So far, I'd say yes...but only because the team is winning with him. If he's not going to hit more than twelve to fifteen homers, I need to see less K's and more line drives.
Second question. Mark Cuban is rumored to have offered 1.3 Billion dollars for the Cubs. Thoughts on him owning the team? I am 100% all for it. Make that 1.3 billion percent all for it.
Have a great week everyone. Let's expand this lead.
Deal or no Deal?
Okay, so we stand pat. Not Lilpat. I don't disagree with the decision from one perspective -- which is making a deal for the sake of making a deal at the deadline. I think we'll still add some depth but am glad the core is intact for the stretch because I think this team likes playing together.
Manny to the Dodgers. Odd. Both LA teams seem to stockpile outfielders.
Now that Mojo is a centerfielder fan...let's talk about that. RJE is our best player. Between these two guys we are looking at 18 homers and 80 rbi's. Leads the team. I'd still take Nate McClouth if we could steal him from the Pirates because he's going to a long term stud in CF...but I don't think they'll give him up until he's in a contract year.
Great pitching in the "Wrigley North" series -- if we can keep THAT up, we're in good shape. I forgive Scott Eyre the bad outing yesterday as he hasn't been in a game in a while and the Brewers had to be thrilled to see "anybody else."
I'm glad we kept Eyre, Cotts and Marshall -- in the long, hot summer it will be good to have three lefties in the pen, and Marshall can always spot start if needed.
I know the Red Sox just dumped a head case, but does anyone else think that they got a whole bunch less scary? I don't think they'll make the playoffs this year. Neither will the Dodgers. Lose/Lose?
These quality starts are going to give our bully a much needed rest, and that will help a lot in August and September. Howry will be fine -- yes, he throws fastballs, but they MOVE when he's right, and he's not right when you pitch him too much. He can go a few days in a row...but still needs a break every now and again. Get off his back. His stats are still skewed by a shitty first two months. He's still one of the best inning 7 men around.
What's wrong with Harden? Only 9 strikeouts yesterday.
Thought for the day. If we make -- check that -- when we make the World Series...should we hold Zambrano for game three so that he can bat? It's a HUGE advantage for us having him in the lineup in the national league games. Do you go Harden, Dempster in the AL park and Big Z, Lilly at home? I would -- it's a nice edge to have. Thoughts? Or am I retarded?
Blog is late today because I didn't get home until after 1am last night and I just didn't feel like firing up the old "computing machine" early today. Sorry.
More later, perhaps...or maybe just pithy comments in response to your pithy comments. And no, I don't type with a lisp.
