Who cares

About the Twins and White Sox? As far as I'm concerned, it's a non baseball day.

I'm pulling for the Twins because I hate the Sox, but think that either of them will lose to the mighty Rays in round one anyway. And the Rays will lose to the winner of the Angels - Red Sox.

I have an odd feeling the Red Sox are going to cruise past the Angels. Don't know why I think that, just do.

AL MVP will be K-Rod, but not according to Mark Grace who said "they have their own award." I still think he'll win it, because he's not getting the Cy Young.

NL MVP should be Ryan Howard.

Managers of the Year? Maddon in the AL. Who else? In the NL? Could be Lou. Dark horse is Cecil Cooper -- have to give the Astro's credit for hanging in as long as they did after an awful start and the loss of Carlos Lee. Torre? No. They weren't in it until they got Manny and he had nothing to do with that.

Have a great Tuesday...much more to talk about tomorrow!

Off to the postseason we go

Not exactly the way I'd have liked -- with a win, and facing the Mets, but what the hell...at least we are in.

I've been laid up -- so I've been Smittying the updates, sorry.

Re: Saturday - someone please teach Felix Pie to say "I got it" and then catch it.

Re: Sunday -- I think it would have been an important win. Too bad Lou didn't think so.

Re: the Dodgers -- they have some experience and youth...a nice mix. Furcal seems healthy. Kent is back and Manny is Manny. I think it could go five games.

Re: the Brewers. I hope the Phillies beat them because I really don't want to play them in round two.

In the AL? As long and the White Sox don't make it, I don't care what happens.

More later when the drugs start to wear off. Or not.

Good news, bad news

It's always good news to come from behind and win a game. That's the good news. Still a lot of fight in these guys, even in a game that really doesn't mean anything to us. That's a Lou Piniella influence, I think. Dusty would have mailed it in.

Bad news? Is Big Z okay? Was that just an issue of an ump who didn't match up well with Carlos' strike zone? Sometimes Carlos doesn't adjust. Or is there a bigger problem? Either way, I think that he has pitched himself into the number three starter spot.

Howry gives up a leadoff triple -- AND PITCHES OUT OF IT. That was cool.

This just in: Clay Aiken has revealed that he is gay. That's news?

Insignificant trivia tidbit for the day: In those 20 plus years as a terrific pitcher, Jim Palmer NEVER game up a grand slam. Why? He felt that there was never a good reason to give in to a hitter. Just because the bases may have been loaded or there were three balls on the batter -- he wasn't going to give in. What he said was "I'd rather walk in one, than give up four. One is easier to get back. If I lose this one, I'll get the next guy." I think there is something to be said for smart pitchers.

Really, Clay? Who'd have known? You hide it so well.

We need to take three of four from the Mets and the Brewers. That would be a nice way to finish the regular season, and make them fight for it. Mets finish with Philly, so they'd have to win to get it. Otherwise...Houston could snake them both out if they keep winning.

Samardzija is going to be good, but that wasn't wise to throw DelGado an 0-2 fastball. He'll learn from that mistake.

Very quietly, Aramis Ramirez has had one hell of a year.

more later, or not.

The Wild Card Race

Not much left in regular season worth following except the wild card race in the NL. AL is settled, although Boston still has a chance to win the division, which it appears they won't. Now, Minnesota catching and passing the White Sox? That would be awesome. Go Twins. Ozzie would have to kick his own ass, swearing the whole time, on national television.

We lose to the Mets. And I couldn't have cared less. Santana needed to throw 125 pitches. Mets are now one up on the Brewers (who play the AA Pirate affiliate all week) so that race could get close. I've decided that I don't want the Brewers in the playoffs at all.

Right now I think that Marquis and Marshall have to be on the postseason roster. Not so sure about Gaudin. He's been pretty bad of late.

My roster would be this:

Pitchers: Zambrano, Harden, Dempster, Lilly, Marquis, Marshall, Wood, Marmol, Cotts, Samardzija, and Howry. Yes, Howry. He's got more experience and when the chips are down I still think he'll come through. I'd carry eleven pitchers for the first round. I'm leaving off Wuertz, Hart, Guzman, Gaudin.

Non-pitchers: Soto, Blanco, Lee, DeRosa, Fontenot, Theriot, Cedeno, Ramirez, Soriano, Edmonds, Johnson, Fukudome, Ward, and Pie. Yes, Pie. Hoffpauir is too similar to Ward in that he's not great defensively. Pie at least gives us excellent defense if need be, and speed. He can pinch run. If we had a bigger right handed bat in the mix, I'd chose that over Pie...but we don't.

I expect that Lou will go with 12 pitchers and leave off Pie.

I hope that Z is sharp tonight so that we can all quit worrying about him.

Big party at Merkle's (bar across from Wrigley) last night. Did any of you go? I did not, but would have liked to.

I received my notification yesterday that I did not get the opportunity to purchase playoff tickets. Maybe if we play the Dodgers or Angels I can go out here.

Fred Merkle

Today is the 100th anniversary of the infamous "Merkle Boner." (that's what they called it back then. Stop it.)

Cubs - Giants were tied 1 - 1 going into the bottom of the ninth in NY. (that's where the Giants were from back then, Smitty.) Merkle singled to put runners on first and third with 2 outs. Next guy singles in the winning run and Fred Merkle joins the celebration without touching second base. Evers or Chance, the record isn't clear on which one, and I wasn't there -- gets the ball, touches second and Merkle is declared out. Problem is that thousands of people are on the field and it's getting dark. No lights. So the game is declared a tie. Cubs and Giants finish the season with identical records and the Cubs win the playoff game 4 - 2 to win the pennant. They Cubbies go on to win the World Series. This was 1908. Thanks, Fred.

Just a little tidbit of Cub history that I thought you all might like to know.

Jason Marquis deserves to be on the postseason roster. Even if he doesn't get a start, he can do a lot of things, including long relief if necessary. With our staff, however, if we are in a series and jump out to a two or three game to nothing lead, it makes sense to keep the rotation at five guys and let them all have their regular rest. Certainly protects Harden and Zambrano at this point. Plus, Marquis matches up well against any team's number 3, 4 or 5 pitcher, I think. And he hit a grand slam last night. Had to enjoy that in front of the family.

DLee hit a homer on the road last night. Call Ripley's.

Tonight can be a message game -- beating Santana would be nice. Plus we need to at least win two in each of these last four game series...so it would ensure that. Once again, it's not televised here.

So...who's coming to San Clemente for a playoff game party this year? More on that later.

World Series Strategy and more

I know I might be jumping the gun, but after watching the AAA Cubs whoop the Cards yesterday, I can't help but think about the World Series for a moment.

I think that the following ideas are important to our postseason success, so feel free to forward them to Lou, Jim and the rest of the Cubbie braintrust.

I know that you do what you have to in the playoffs to GET to the World Series, so these suggestions are based on the big IF that things go perfectly and we can set up our rotation as we WANT to for the World Series. In that case, I strongly suggest:

A. Harden and Lilly pitch the first two games of the World Series. Why? Simple. There are three reasons.

1. Harden and Lilly are both much more familiar with whatever American League in which we will play having spent most of their careers in that league.

2. This is a biggie. Zambrano should pitch game three because it is at home and that gets his BAT into the lineup. That is a huge advantage for us over whoever the AL pitcher in the game is.

3. Dempster goes game four. Just look at his home record.

B. In the American League park, Soriano should DH. Why?

1. The obvious reason is defense. Reed Johnson, Fukudome, Pie, the little kid across the street -- are all better fielders.

2. The secondary reason is offense. We don't have a DH in the dugout. Why would we, right? I mean, Ward? Not really. He's no Ortiz or Thome or Vlad...AL teams are built for DH's. NL teams are not. Our right handed DH vs a lefty starter? Cedeno? Come on. Use Sori...and make up for the lack of DH with defense. The pitchers will thank you.

I was in St. Louis this weekend on business and this all just came to me. I was sitting talking with some Cardinal fans, the self proclaimed "smartest baseball fans in the world" (excuse me I just threw up a little in my mouth)...and they were going on and on about whatever it is they talk about -- something like "blah blah blah Pujols blah blah blah Pujols blah blah" and I had this epiphany about the rotation. Funny where the mind will go when it is forced to seek its own intelligent entertainment.

Speaking of Cardinal fans, guy says to me that they (Cards) need pitching so bad. Also mentions that the only Cub he'd want is Marmol. Also says that Santana and Lincecum and the two best pitchers in baseball. So I asked him...would you trade Pujols for Santana, Lincecum and Marmol. He says "no way." Also said he'd only trade him for Bob Gibson, so I think he might have been retarded. For the record, I'd trade anyone for those three. Also for the record? Bob Gibson is like 75 now.

Have a great week. Let's clinch that home field advantage today and keep the momentum rolling. Rest everyone. Get the rotation ready. And let's all pray for nice weather in Chicago in October. Can you imagine playing the Red Sox in the series if it's a shitty winter? Might have to play on a neutral field with a dome. Milwaukee might be nice.

Go Cubs.

Cubs win! Cubs win! Holy Cow!

Harry would be so happy.

Congratulations to the Cubs and all the fans for winning the NL Central today. Nice to win it, too, rather than back into it. Wait for it, wait for it...nope, I am not going to make a "back into it" joke. Not today. We just clinched the division.

I bet Wrigleyville was a lot of fun this evening! Wish I could have been there. I had to settle for razzing Cardinal fans here in St. Louis. Satisfying, sure, but not like the party at Wrigley.

Wish Woody would get out of the habit of walking the first batter...that's dangerous. He got the save, though, and that's all that matters.

So we still have the Mets and Brewers to play. What's the strategy? Starters go five? B-team gets a lot more playing time?

Theriot needs a couple of days off. His average has dipped under .300 for the first time in a while and I think he's just gassed. Give him three or four days to recharge. Start Cedeno. Give Soto a nice break -- Blanco and Hill can catch a few. Get Fontenot plenty of at bats, because the more he hits the better he gets. We'll need him hot off the bench in the playoffs. Rest Edmonds. I think Soriano needs to keep playing to find and keep a groove.

Again...all in all -- it's been a great year. Let's not screw this one up! Let's play solid going into the playoffs, get our staff in order...and kick some ass in the postseason. Go Cubs.

Oops

Not the best game, but hey, at least the B-team scored six runs. St. Louis station is now replaying it. I think I'll pass.

Zambrano went to Venezuela this week because his grandmother passed away. I really think they should have started Marshall or someone else and given him an extra day. Oh well.

Brewers free fall continues -- as I write this they are getting killed by the Reds 9-1. Ouch. I think that since Sabathia won't re-sign anyway, they should just pitch him every day.

Question: Who would you rather have on your team: Alfonso Soriano and Mark DeRosa or Gary Matthews and Ryne Sandberg? How about Mark Grace and Shawon Dunston or DLee and Ryan Theriot? Who would you rather have in your bullpen? Kerry Wood or Mitch Williams?

Final question: was Tommy John better before or after the surgery?

Go get 'em tomorrow, Ted Lilly. Need to clinch early. Magic number is going to be one if a few minutes.

Thursday, September 18, 2008

Yeah, now THAT was awesome!

Yes, indeed. Props to Soto for the big ninth inning bomb and the three guys before him for keeping the game alive.

Mini props to DLee for the walk off single. He still has the same number of homers as does Jim Edmonds -- in TWICE the number of games played...so I'm not totally happy with him, but today is today and he did what we needed him to do. He went 1 - 6 with a walk off single. And a killer DP earlier, but I will not mention that.

Major props to Kerry Wood. Not for the three strike out 11th, although that was dominant and very cool, but for the runners on second and third with no outs in the 12th -- and getting out of it without surrendering a run. THAT won the game for us. That was an iron nut sack performance and it does show that he has what it takes to close.

Edmonds is starting to heat up -- and it's a good time for him with playoffs starting soon. Old guy still has a little fire, too. 19 homers and over 50 rbi's in 78 games. Do the math. Not too shabby.

I wonder if they showed today's game on Fox Sports Cozumel? If not, Doc missed a good one. That'll teach him to take a family vacation during September. What's HE thinking?

I think that Kosuke Ofordome proved conclusively today that he should be strictly a late inning defensive replacement. An expensive one at that, but let's face it -- the MAN CAN'T HIT.

The Brewers now have a very difficult row to hoe even to make the playoffs. (Yes, I wrote it right. It's "row" to hoe, not "road" to hoe. Who hoes roads?) The question, as raised by Doc Rototiller, is who would you rather play? Let's look at that, shall we?

Dodgers -- arguably the hottest team in baseball right now. Clicking on most cylinders. Pretty decent starting pitching. Lowe has been tremendous down the stretch, and has playoff experience. Minus their closer, but Broxton throws 100 and is getting better by the game. Plus you now have to deal with Manny in the middle of a decent young lineup. Better than their record, I'd say.

Mets -- Santana and then what? Pedro for 5.1 innings? Awful bullpen. No closer. Inconsistent offense -- but they've been mashing lately. Delgado seems to have forgotten that he's 47.

Phillies -- not as good as they have been playing. Scary offense. Decent pitching...not as strong as it looked against us a couple of weeks ago.

Brewers -- Sabathia. Can he pitch every game? If not, they're done.

Houston. Oops. Hasn't won since the no no. Big Z "roont" them.

I think we end up with the Mets. I think we'll beat them, and then play the Dodgers for the NL Championship. Look for me at Dodger stadium. I'll be the guy with the Cub shirt.

best to cb

I'll be in St. Louis all weekend. Talking trash if we beat up on the Cards.

js

Not a very good night

Truly horrid night, in my opinion, starting with Joe West behind the plate. His ball/strike calls are as bad as anyone I've ever seen. Why can't MLB do something about that? Forget instant replay on homers -- how about making umpires call strikes as strikes and balls as balls?

That said, we still stunk offensively. It was not all West's fault. Even Sutcliffe called out DLee...said "he's struck out swinging twice -- you need better than that from your number three hitter." I agree. Have for months. He should not be hitting third. Period. I'd rather see Aramis hit third, Soto fourth and Lee fifth if need be. Get Ramirez the extra at bats.

Marquis set the tone. Hit. Walk. Walk. Only upside to the first inning was that Cecil didn't hit a grand slam, merely a base clearing double.

Another interesting comment last night from Sut -- "they were prepared for Sheets, and they can't seem to adjust to anything else." Are we that stupid? Really? "Um, I know that's not Ben Sheets out there, but I'm gonna purtend it is because that's what I purpared fer all day."

Oh, well. It shouldn't matter much. Need for Harden to do his thing tonight and get us back on the winning track. Cut into that magic number and drop the Brewers further back. Get ready to clinch v St. Louis this weekend. I'll actually be in St. Louis this weekend, not that it has anything to do with it. It's not Cozumel, but hey, it's not a vacation.

Go Cubs.

Trivial nonsense

This doesn't mean much...but it interested me, so I'm sharing it. Read it or not.

Baseball -- broken down BY DIVISION -- won/loss, win % and average w/l for all teams in division

AL West: 294 - 308 .489 74 - 77

AL Central: 377 - 376 .501 75 - 75

AL East: 405 - 346 .540 81 - 69

NL West: 348 - 408 .461 70 - 82

NL Central: 464 - 437 .515 77 - 73

NL East: 370 - 373 .498 74 - 75

So, it is obvious that the two best divisions in baseball are the AL East and the NL central. No big surprise there. Therefore, we are looking at the Cubs and either the Rays or Red Sox in the World Series. The Angels W/L is obviously skewed by playing in the weakest division in the AL.

By league?

AL: 1076 - 1030 .511 77 - 74 7 of the 14 teams are .500 or better

NL: 1182 - 1218 .493 74 - 76 8 of the 16 teams are .500 or better

Just thought you'd like to know.

MVP

Cub MVP for the year? Very difficult choice. Obviously, Ryan Dempster is near the top of the list...as Mojo says in a comment yesterday. I also have to nominate the following: Aramis Ramirez -- clutch hitting all year with big RBI count. Ryan Theriot -- his defense has been solid, he's been on base all year and has kept his average over .300 all season. Mark DeRosa -- has had a personal career year with average, power numbers, and runs batted in. Not to mention above average defense at multiple positions. Geovany Soto -- outstanding offensive year for a catcher (not to mention a rookie) and is getting so much credit from the pitching staff for being a terrific receiver. Have to give him some of the credit for the success of the staff.

So who is the team MVP? Pretty cool that Dempster could go from closer to starter with such success. He's been just great. But he's not the MVP. Sorry. He's the team Cy Young, if there is such a thing. There should be. It isn't DeRosa or Theriot. They've been great, but their accomplishments are slightly behind those of Soto and Ramirez.

Ramirez is our horse. He's our stud in the lineup. He's the guy you want at bat in the late innings. He's played better defense this year than ever before (except for one game with 3 errors. It happens.) But he's not the MVP. Sorry, Rammy.

Geovany Soto is the MVP of this year's team. He's the rookie of the year, too. He has handled the best pitching staff in baseball all year. And he's taken control, which is unusual and very special. His offense has been amazing...considering his position -- and offense for a catcher is just icing on the cake. This day and age you either get a good defensive catcher OR a catcher who can hit. This kid is both, and he's getting better. Zambrano said that Soto pretty much called the whole no hitter. So there you have it. Our team MVP. Geo Soto.

Nice job, Cubbies, beating CC Sabathia and the Brewers. Wood does not deserve a save for that. How about giving him a "near blow?" (get your mind out of the gutter.) New stat for closers that come in with a two or more run lead and end up winning by the skin of their teeth. I really wish he'd cut that out.

I hear that Fielder gets really, really, really mad when the fans call him Cecil. Therefore, he is forever now Cecil to me. When asked about the pitch he took for strike three to end the game, he said "I'm hungry."

When Sabathia was asked about the pitch to Soriano for the homer, he said "lay off me, I'm starving."

Ned Yost watched the game with Willie Randolph.

I predict an excellent start from Jason Marquis tonight. He's been getting a little extra rest, and it has made a difference these last several starts. He's always had a tough second half...not this year thanks to the extra days off. Look for him to be solid.

Magic number is four for the division and five for home field advantage through the playoffs.

Go Cubs. Look for Fukudome to play well tonight. I have a feeling.

Oh, and I sent a team of thugs to Cozumel to keep Doc there until after the series.

What a difference a week makes

Lilly pitched almost as well as Zambrano.

Derrek Lee hit a homer.

The red hot Astros aren't.

Howry pitched a perfect ninth.

Edmonds homered.

A week ago, things were starting to look a little sketchy. Hurricane Ike blew in and took away the blahs, apparently, and all is right in Cubnation for the moment. The Cubs take two of three from the Cardinals, who may now begin their vacation because they are done. We sweep the Astro's in Miller Made Park (much to their chagrin and whining -- more on that in a moment) and suddenly we look like the best team in the NL, and perhaps baseball, again.

Provided that DLee ever homers again, we have a legit shot at six guys with 20 plus homers, which is remarkable. Soriano, Lee, Ramirez, Soto, DeRosa and Edmonds (Edmonds needs two more.) Even more amazing to me, though, is that Fontenot needs one more for ten...and he hasn't had that many at bats. I think he's a twenty homer guy in a full season, too.

Dempster had a great line. When asked about going head to head with Sabathia this week...and asked why he got that assignment, he said "probably the way I swing the bat against lefties." I hope he gets two hits off CC. Speaking of the Brewers -- let's put them away this week once and for all. It is now conceivable (if we don't let them off the mat) that they won't even make the wild card. Which is one of my three 2008 baseball wishes. The other two are that the Cubs win the World Series (that one was obvious) and the other is for me to sing Take me out to the ball game during the stretch at one of the series games. It would be great, wouldn't it, to see the Brewers give up five solid prospects for a pitcher who doesn't get them to the off season (by no fault of his own) and then lose him to free agency? That would tickle my funny bone.

Monumental tank by Milwaukee this week in Philly. It could be the Mets and Phillies who make the playoffs now, along with the Cubs and Dodgers.

Houston is whining. I mean, sure I feel bad about the Hurricane. That's a tough thing to have happen to your city. But come on. You are pros. It shouldn't really matter where you play. Cecil Cooper is complaining to the Comish that Miller wasn't neutral enough. Doesn't he know Cub fans come out like that to every city in the league? It could have been KC. Same thing. They still get no hit. They still lose. They still listen to thousands of Cub fans make noise v the fourteen Astro fans. Doesn't matter where you are.

I gots to do some work. Props again to Lilly for a great effort. Go Cubs.

Nice to hear from Smitty and Raker on the SAME day yesterday. Wow. I felt special.

A thought

As the no hitter continues -- Lilly goes three up and three down in the bottom of the first -- I started to wonder. What if no one ever gets another hit against Cub pitching? What if no hitters become so common that Lou starts pulling guys because of pitch counts and letting the bullpen mop up with no hit relief? Could happen. I was just thinking it and thought I'd share.

RIBL

The Radical Islam Baseball League had to shut down today. They ran out of baserunners after a gross misunderstanding of the "suicide squeeze."

Turning point

That was a statement, a turning point, and a very decisive day yesterday --

Congrats to Big Z for tossing a thoroughly dominating no hitter. That was awesome.

Even more awesome, though, in the grand scheme of things, was beating Houston while Milwaukee tanked two to the Phillies to complete their anti-sweep of that series. We are now 7.5 up on the Brewers, 9.5 on Houston, and St. Louis, well, they're done.

We still have some important games to play and some good teams to beat -- don't get me wrong -- but we are in a very good position now to get it done. A lot less doubt is swirling this morning than there was last week.

Question. It was Doc R who said that sports fans are superstitious and that he's one of them. He said that if he takes a sip of water before the pitch and Big Z throws a strike...he takes a sip before the next pitch. Remember? Well, I am starting a petition to keep him in Cozumel forever. Under the circumstances, it makes sense. We're 3 and 0, with a no hitter on our side since he left. None of the Brewers, Astros or Cards have won a game in that time. It's the least he can do. He can come home in the off season, but I'd like him back there by April.

Even DLee had a good game. Big two run double in a situation when the 3 hitter needs to come through. Plus he made a great play. He's off the hook. For a day.

For those of you that were on the Ohio State bandwagon...I hope you didn't get injured jumping off it. And, no, Ohio State isn't that bad. USC is just that good.

Let's hope that Lilly can repeat his last outing. Our chance to win it all is on the back of our pitching...let's beat the Astros again today and get ready to put the Brewers away once and for all at home this week. Our other home, Wrigley. Not Wrigley North, the one in Wisconsin.

have a great day...celebrate the lead and celebrate the no no.

D Lee

0 for 5 with 6 LOB -- he killed that first inning...striking out with runners on 1st and 3rd with no outs. Have to make contact in that situation.

I demand to see Hoffpauir at first base.

Let's hope Wood can hold them...

JS

Finally!

Cubs win. Cubs win.

Barely. Why didn't Lilly get to finish that game? He had thrown only 90 pitches. Wood almost blew it. Just wondering. Is Lou using the Dusty Baker book of "Gotta use the closer, no matter what?"

Speaking of Dusty -- damn them for not sweeping the Brewers.

Pie played well. On base three times. Good to see. Start him again today.

Lots of LOBs for Lee and Theriot yesterday. Theriot is a table setter...Lee's job is to knock in runs.

Re: Hoffpauir. Was that it? Two games? Didn't go 6 for 8, so back to Fukudome? Will he ever get to play first base? I want to see this guy play. I want him to get 30 at bats over the next two weeks to see what happens. Come on, Lou.

Ted Lilly was terrific yesterday. The key was the two inning game last week. Maybe he needed the rest.

Time to go on a win streak. Come on, Rich Harden -- give us a great game today and keep it going.

We interrupt our regularly scheduled programming to bring you this special post

It's a baseball blog, y'all. More specifically, a Cub blog. Whilst I, too, enjoy a good chatterboxing about what's on the telly, this is not the forum for that. If you'd like, I will start a new blog and call it Shermstellypicks and we can go on and on about Dexter, The Shield, et al.

Alas, I am concerned also about Smitty. He's either constipated or Homo Joe. Either way, that's kind of disturbing.

And now, back to Shermrants, already in progress:

...and that's why I think the Blue Jays and Astros are the two best teams in baseball right now. Unfortunately for them and their fans, it's too little, too late.

The Red Sox are better with Jason Bay than they were with Manny. How is that possible? Chemistry? Look out Rays, here come the Sox. Kotsay was a great pickup for them.

We should go get Roy Halladay from the Blue Jays -- I don't mean trade for him, I mean kidnap him. No one knows what he looks like anyway, because he's played his whole career in Canada, so we change his name and use him. Thoughts?

We need to beat Kyle Lohse tonight. He's been tough on us this year...and I still don't think he's as good as his record indicates. Start the youngsters...I demand to see Hoffpauir in the starting lineup. Personally, I think we should start Pie and Fontenot, too.

Soriano (because some things are sacred)
Theriot
Lee (because Lou can't think past this)
Ramirez
Hoffpauir (rf)
Soto
Pie
Fontenot
Dempster

Give DeRosa a night off. Give Reedmonds a night off. Give Bailodome a night off (again)

Weekend update

Remember when weekend update used to be a funny thing? That segment on Saturday Night Live with Dan and Jane? And then Dennis Miller? And others? Well, it isn't funny this weekend.

Not when we blow a game like we did yesterday, and with it a chance to extend the lead on the Brewers. Horrible. That just can't happen. Even the Saturday game -- 8 runs in the final two innings? Come on. What's happened to the bullpen?

We got rid of Scott Eyre way too soon, for one thing. Now all you hear is that Cotts is alone as the only lefty out there. You can blame Cedeno for yesterday...but Wood is the one who put all those guys on base. That mighty murderers row of a Cincinnati Red lineup. There is a reason they've won all those what? 60 games?

Jon Lieber went home. Told Hendry that his arm has an owie and went home. He's done. Cut him loose.

Sean Marshall was terrific again yesterday. He deserves to be a starting pitcher, and he's good enough. He's got the mental fortitude. My guess is that he'll take Marquis' place next year -- even though Marquis, who has had his ups and downs, is an inning eater. During a year when other guys are in and out of the rotation, Marquis never misses a start. And could be about 13 - 5 with some support in the games he throws.

This just in: Japanese translation for Kosuke? Neifi.

Fukudome is a bust. No I won't be patient. Hoffpauir or DeRosa in RF everyday from here out. Neifi can pinch run.

Fontenot needs to be in the line up. Lou says "if you produce, you play. Period." And then once again Fontenot does not play. What's that all about?

Edmonds needs a week off. I'll say it again. Fuck Iowa, bring Pie back for a little while to: 1.) see if he can hit at this level and has learned anything, 2.) shore up the defense -especially if Hoffy is in RF, and 3.) put some more youth on the September roster. Enthusiasm is catching, or so they say.

Bench Cedeno for a week. I know I said not to blame him, but bench him anyhow.

We need to finish off the Cards once and for all this week, and hope that the remarkable Reds (that was dripping with sarcasm in case you didn't know it) can take care of the Brewers. Rumor is that Sabathia will be pitching the last nineteen games himself.

Today's question: who'd you rather have in left field? Soriano or Manny Ramirez?

Everyone is caught up in winning 100 games and all that kind of crap. I think we should concentrate on winning tomorrow. Win the division. Get that home field advantage in the NL playoffs.

Have a great Monday everyone. At least the Bears looked real good!

Is it too soon to say "uh-oh"

Uh-oh. Just in case it isn't too soon.

Okay, so the Phillies beat us two straight...but they are a pretty good team fighting for their lives in the NL east, right? Good excuse. Let's let those go. (Not to mention that they easily could have swept us, and according to their fans...SHOULD have.)

Then the Astros came in and swept us. Spanked us pretty good at home. But, hey, they were the hottest team in baseball at the time, all fired up, fighting for their lives, trying to make the wild card...yadda yadda yadda -- Good excuse. Let's let those go. No reason to panic, right?

Then the lowly fucking stinking Reds kick the shit out of us? I'm having a tough time with that. I'm looking for the excuse. Maybe you can help me find it because I can't. Bronson Arroyo isn't THAT good. Our offense may just be THAT bad. At least we trotted (and I use that term VERY VERY VERY literally) our A-team out there. Lots of 0-fers -- lots of 'em. Nice big 0-fer from Suckodome again. Lee dribbled a single. Soriano nothing. Koyie "Mordecai" Hill was our offense.

So, after last night's game, I am officially saying "uh-oh."

I am not a pessimist, not am I jumping on and off any fictional bandwagon. Just calling it as I see it...and I, for one, don't like the way it looks. I say give every starter a day off (except the pitcher) and let the callups and backups have a shot.

Today's lineup:

Reed Johnson CF
Mike Fontenot 2b
Micah Hoffpauir LF
Casey McGeehee 3b
Daryl Ward 1b
Ronny Cedeno ss
Koyie Hill c
Mark DeRosa rf (sorry, Mark...there's no one else since Pie is still at AAA)
Jason Marquis

You could put Ward in right, Hoffpauir at first and let Cedeno play left and leave Theriot at ss, too. Mix it up, for goodness' sake. We're stinking right now...what's the harm in trying something new? Does that go against the "book?" Horrors.

Where's Matt Murton when we need him? (Please don't hammer me on that, Doc, I'm joking.)

The only upside is that most of these games aren't televised. My new rule? If I don't see it, it didn't happen. It's the ostrich theory of baseball. Try it.

Secret Weapon

The off day. Great way to pick up a half game and no one got hurt.

Now Big Z has rotator cuff tendonitis. This will limit his pitching in an attempt to have him available for the playoffs.

Harden is complaining of shoulder "discomfort." This is interesting. Let's delve a little deeper into the Harden thing. I said earlier that it's so rare to "win" a trade with Billy Beane. For a few weeks it seemed that we won this one. But now? Did Beane know that it was just a matter of when (not if) Harden broke down? Did we give him Murton, EPat, and Gallagher for a guy who's never really going to sustain? I think you do have to wonder about that. I hope that's not the case.

We are not markedly better than last year without those two pitchers in the rotation.

So that raises the following question: Did we make a mistake NOT pursuing and acquiring Sabathia? Thoughts? Comments? I mean the guy throws 200 pitches every fourth day.

As they say, you cannot unring a bell. So...on with what we have, I suppose...and we shall see what happens.

It's a distinct possibility that our playoff rotation will be: Dempster, Lilly, Marquis and Marshall. Which means that we'd better untrack the offense because those guys, while good, will need some run support to win a playoff series. Time for Lou "Mr. Keep Everybody Sharp and Rested" Piniella to use some of the call ups and give some of the struggling vets a rest. I demand to see Hoffpauir at first in the Cincy series at least once. As the starter. Fuck Iowa, call up Pie and let's see if he's learned anything at all in the last four months.

Soriano needs to bat third. Period. All there is to it. Lee is getting it done in the 3 spot. Soriano needs some fastballs to hit. That's the place for him. I spoke to Mojo about it and he agrees, so I know it's right.

Theriot
Fontenot
Soriano
Ramirez
Soto
Lee
DeRosa
Edmonds
Pitcher

You can work Fukuslappy in there if you want. I didn't want.

Have a great day. Let's beat the Reds, okay?

Sometimes it sucks to be so right

I'm going to quote from a comment I made earlier:

"Let's talk about tonight. Randy Wolf is a soft tossing lefty. He's going to tie our righties into fits with that change and slow curve. Just so happens that Edmonds, Ward and probably Fontenot could all hit him. Edmonds and Ward are very good on the change. Notice I didn't mention Fukusitdown. But we will have our all right handed lineup in the game tonight, and who knows what'll happen. We will see..."

Oops. Not a lefty in the lineup. Good thing we swung at so many first pitches, too, so that Wolf could go all nine. Guy had over 100 pitches in the seventh but we are still up there hacking at everything early in the count. Except Cedeno for some reason...who actually had a good night save getting thrown out at home. I didn't see it...so I can't comment.

Well, it's official. Hey world, the Cubs can't hit a change or slow curve!

What a pathetic offensive week this has been. Good thing we brough Hoffpauir up. Doesn't Iowa need him? Where's the shake up Lou talked about the other day? Or was this it? Might be, cause I feel pretty shaken.

This whole losing streak really messes things up. Look at the affect that it has on people. Look at Smitty, for God's sake. He can barely blog. And when he does, it's totally incomprehensible. Suddenly Ralph's litany of forwards aren't funny. (What's that? They were never funny? Right. See? Even my memory is fading.) Doc Weedwhacker is now taking his lunch to work and saving his sardonic predictions for his patients. They've begun begging for anesthesia. And he's an eye doctor. Mojo is just downright cranky. A. Orta, MD is considering Brewer camp. Madness!

Thank goodness the Mets swept the Brewers...but that has some scary historical roots, too. We finally get the big lead for most of the season and here come the Mets. Sounds too familiar for me.

Now we find out that Zambrano has a dead arm, or an injury, or a toothache, or whatever...and Harden is being pushed back for "caution" -- I have this nightmare. Our playoff rotation is Lilly, Dempster, Marquis and Marshall. Suddenly not so scary. Please let me be wrong about that.

Send McGeeheehaw back down.

Political note: I'm listening to Sarah Palin and gotta tell you...I like her. She's tough and will make a great Vice President.

best to cb.

Let's hope the Cubs win again eventually. That'd be nice.

Still waiting on that clutch

I'm going to post tonight, since I have an early morning tomorrow and I'm in Toronto. No WGN here, so I had to "watch" the game on gameday on the website.

Great game. Congratulations to the Astros for bitch slapping us around at home.

Nice job, DLee...wasting multiple game winning opportunities. Get him out of the 3 spot.

Aramis is tired. More errors than hits. There goes the Gold Glove he wanted.

Soto and Theriot produced again. Good thing they were down at the bottom of the order where they couldn't do more damage.

We scratch back and blow it. There goes all the rest the players had.

Note: Valverde through all fastballs. Something like 25 in a row in the ninth.

In the bullpen's defense -- all we need was a run in the 8th, 9th or 10th, and we sure had the opportunities. Bases loaded, one out in the eighth for DPLee. 2 on with no out in the 10th. And why bunt DeRosa in the 9th? For one, he has some pop and HAS been hitting, and also, ARam is running and he doesn't run fast even when he can. Stupid out.

I also disagree with pulling Fontenot for Blanco. I don't care who is pitching.

We had what? 15 hits and 8 walks? And can't win. With Zambrano starting? And now they announce that Harden will miss his next start "as a precaution." What the fuck does that mean? Precaution for what? He hasn't pitched on short rest and he hasn't gone deep into a game yet. What are we "precautioning?" Is his arm going to fall off any minute? What the hell? I'm not going to work Thursday "as a precaution." Because "something" might happen. Absurd, unless there is a problem. If so, say so.

Howry/Wuertz looked good. Or should I say Whackit and Smackit?

Blum beats us. He's the replacement third baseman because Wigginton is playing left for Carlos Lee. El Cafatso. Blum and his .235 average.

Thanks again to the Mets for keeping us insecurely ahead of the Brewers.

Wood and Marmol both go two innings, so they won't be available tomorrow. Need a complete game.

Being a Cub fan for as long as I have...this is starting to bother me. You can tell me to relax, but we all know how fast a season can turn. Lou needs to do something to end this slump and get this team "righted." We all know that the "hot" team gets through the playoffs, not the one that limps in. I want to feel comfortable about the rotation again. I want to see some clutch hits again...from the guys making the big $$ to produce clutch hits.

I want to see Micah Hoffpauir get some at bats and see if he can light up the bigs like he did the minors. He did pretty well last time he was up.

Bottom line? I am nervous. Anyone else?

I feel much better now

We've turned it around. Nice game yesterday. Should have played just the call ups as the rest of the team looked and played poorly. Marquis really wasn't too bad, but if you can't score, you usually won't win.

Not that it mattered much yesterday in the grand scheme of things, but batting Fukudome second? Another 0 - 4. Did anyone believe that he could hit Oswalt? He can't hit any lefty, or good righty. He is decent against below average righties who can't hit their spots. I do have to give him that.

Of course the middle of the order -- 2 through 6 -- went 0 for 17. Question. Gerald Perry is the hitting coach, right? Do they have team meetings about strategy against each pitcher before each game? I was wondering because sometimes the whole team looks equally out of sync. Does he tell them "good idea to look at first pitch strikes today" and "make sure you swing at that slider that dips out of the zone?" Just wondering.

Pie is apparently having a pretty nice finish to his minor league season, but they didn't call him up because Iowa is in the playoffs. I am glad that the organization has its priorities in line. Wouldn't want to cost Iowa in the playoffs. Meanwhile, Edmonds is slumping...I wouldn't mind seeing Pie get a shot at centerfield a few games here in September while we are in a pennant race. But I wouldn't want to get in Iowa's way. I mean, when was the last time Iowa won it all?

I'd like to see Hoffpauir get a few days of starts. Give DLee a rest. Maybe he can play right field, too? Don't know. Find him a spot in the lineup, though. The offense looks sluggish.

Zambrano should be fine today. His arm got an extra two hours sleep.

Side note: Greg Maddux has had a tired arm since 2002

I'll miss today's game -- traveling again. It'll be over by the time I get where I'm going. Hopefully it will have been a "W" -- tired of losing, and we can't count on the Mets bullpen every day.

Happy Birthday to my son in law, Steve the Met fan. Since it is your birthday, I'm rooting for the Mets today. Just for you.

Auto parts

Wondering about the title to this post? I'll get to that.

I had a wonderful weekend in Phoenix at "Phoenix Cooks" -- a food and wine extravaganza at the Biltmore. It would have been better had the Cubs cooperated the final two games of the debacle, er, series with Philadelphia.

So, after a relaxing weekend you'd think I have no rants, right? Wrong. Real wrong.

1. I blame Saturday's loss on bad managing, pure and simple. Absolutely criminal that Lou replaces DeRosa in that double switch and leaves Stinkodome in the game. That hurt us twice. Two chances to win that game -- both lost thanks to one stupid move. What was he thinking? That Fukudome could possibly hit JC Romero? Come on. The line up rolls and now we have to pinch hit Cedeno for the pitcher's spot instead of having DeRosa up, and then it comes to Stinkodome for the inning ending whiff -- in what should have been the pitcher's spot and THEN we could have pinch hit Cedeno...depending on what DeRosa did. Awful decision. Worried about defense when you are losing and can't score? Poor decision.

2. The simple fact that we can't score runs on Jamie Moyer is a joke. Jamie Moyer? He's older than Ralph. Problem with us Saturday and Sunday? Our clutch went out. (auto parts reference explained.) Sunday's line for our 3 and 4 hitters? 0 for 9. Soriano with risp -- yuk. What the hell? We could have lost all four of those games. Easily. Here's another question for you re: Sunday's game. Any reason that Zambrano and his tired arm couldn't pinch hit? I'd have had no problem with that.

Brewers are creeping up -- I for one think we are going to be the wild card team. I'm not being negative, just realistic. Look at our schedule and look at theirs. Theirs is much easier -- and I've said all season long that we are exposed as the mediocre offensive team that we are against good pitching. Yes, we have a very good pitching team. Better with Big Z in the rotation, but still very good. And yes, we beat up bad pitching. Which will get us to the playoffs. But will our offense get us THROUGH the playoffs? I can't say.

I look at DLee hitting third. Or should I call him Judy, as in "Punch and Judy"? He does not hit for power much anymore. Fine. Let's deal with that. Put him somewhere in the order that makes more sense. Oh wait, we don't have anyone else who hits for power, either. Oops. Soto in the 3 spot, perhaps? Perhaps. Never happen. Just like Soriano leading off...Lou is set in some things.

Like using K.Wood in that blow out vs. the Pirates to "get some work" and then not having him available in the Philly series for a game because he'd had too much work. Thankfully, we didn't need him that game. But, seriously?

Our biggest hitter, ARam, is getting easier to pitch around since we don't have a bona fide number five hitter. Edmonds is tired. Reed Johnson is not a five hitter.

And don't tell the national league, but we can't hit a change up. Shhhhh.

Fontenot is a good hitter, but he doesn't play.

What happens if (here's a hypothetical for you) Hoffpauir comes up and hits .410 with seven homers in September? Does he take Lee's spot at first for the playoffs? Answer: No. Why? I have no fucking idea. Ask Lou.

I like leading the division. Don't get me wrong. I like this team. Don't get me wrong there, either. But we have some uphill battles to win this division with our schedule, and we have some offensive issues to work out to get to, and win the World Series.

Just my two cents. Glad to be back. Or not.

best to cb.
