Peavy?

Doesn't look like the Peavy deal will come to pass, and perhaps that's good...if Hendry thought it was too much...then it probably was. Is Peavy worth 6 - 1 or 7 - 1? I don't know. Padres wanted to base their entire rebuild on the Cubs. I think we might be better off to go and find someone through free agency. Money is sometimes better than players...long term.

I have to say though, that I like the Mets thinking. I know that was disputed on yesterday's comments -- but games are more often won in the eighth and ninth than they are in the early innings. We are not (unless someless dramatic happens) a powerhouse, run scoring, big lead, offensive team. Even with a great staff -- we'll have a lot of close games late and that means that we need to hold and save, hold and save, hold and save. I like the comment I heard today -- someone (a GM) was asked about spending a lot of money on a set up guy, and he said that if it's that important to have a guy for the ninth...it's equally important (and expensive) to have a guy in the eighth. I agree.

Apparently the entire league wants DeRosa -- which means we should either NOT trade him...or get something real good for him.

I am glad that for the time being we still have Marshall. For some reason, I think he's going to be very good this year.

We should trade Soriano.

Huh? What?

Yes. Free up about a hundred million and go get Nate McLouth and someone else for the outfield. Use the rest of the cash to find a leadoff man. Only problem is that I can't think of anyone who might want Soriano. Maybe the Yaguchi Dragons? Is Fukudome's cousin available? His name is Isuktoo.

Teams are getting better this offseason. Are we?

Who's our backup catcher? If we let Soto catch 150 games...we'll just burn him out.

Thoughts on Randy Johnson?

I think we should consider Ben Sheets. Give him a two year deal with incentives and a player option. When he's right...he's easily as good as Peavy.

Well...after this trip I'm done traveling for the year, I think, and thrilled about that. Next post will be from the friendly confines of San Clemente. Anyone have any exciting Christmas plans? All I want is a "staycation." Stay home. Work on the novel. Smoke cigars. Drink. Relax. Chill. Yeah...that sounds nice. Real nice.

this is a classic shermrant. Some questions answered....who wants Soriano? At his current oft-injured price, nobody. I really doubt the Cubs want him, but they are stuck. Hendry is not the genius many believe him to be. Is Peavy worth 6-1....it depends who the 6 are. If the six included any of Samardzija, Derosa, or Fontenot, then no. We should not trade Derosa, because he is the best right fielder we have right now, and probably better than Miltbrad and Abreu anyway. Why downgrade in production just to get a lefty? I expect Marshall to be the 5th starterr regardless of what happens to Marquis...and he will go 11-12 or some such. Not bad...good enough for a #5. No on Randy Johnson. The guy will punish the Cub bullpen with a dozen 4 inning starts. I'd take Ben Sheets, but the Cubs won't, for much the same reason as Peavy. Hendry can't continue to spend money like the federal governmant until a new owner comes in with the jack to back it up. Plus, no way Sheets takes 2 years with a player option, he wants more like 5-6 years I'd guess. Enjoy your staycation. Thanks for 4 months of best to CB's

I wholeheartedly disagree with the Sherminator. We are a powerhouse. What else do you call a team that leads the league in runs scored and run differential. We have the leagues best starting staff, with or without Peavey.

I can think of 2 reasons that Hendry pulled the plug yesterday, and I like them both. first is the stated reason of the cost being too high. If Jim thought it was too high (remember the deal for Juan Pierre?), then it must have been exorbitant. The second possible reason is that the Padres are in a situation, where they are almost forced to unload him, and the Cubs are the only destination he will accept, so he can be had cheaper by waiting a little while. We don't need another starter, Marqius or Marshall will each do fine.
Keep Derosa, consider an extension, multiple teams want him because he is the kind of guy that the Cubs want in a left handed version. sometimes we get too concerned with lefty righty matchups. just hit the damn ball. I don't care at camp if the pitcher drops the ball into the machine with his or her right or left hand, I'm gonna hit .600 either way.

I agree with the setup guy being important. I'm glad Kerry got a pay day, but we would have been a better team with him as a set up or closer.

Trade Alf??? You answered your own lunacy.

2 Ideas for back up catcher, one, Mike Piazza... long shot, but might bite to play for a winner ( see it's only December and I'm delusional again).
Second Rod Blojoynovich (I'm not going to bother to learn to spell it). He's already a cub fan and he's going to need to get used to being a"catcher" in the near future. Guess who takes over the top spot as America's most embarrassing governor. Sarah says thanks.

No thank you on Johnson and Sheets, neither is likely to be as durable as Mark Prior, oh yeah, I hear that was the real reason that Hendry broke off the talks, Towers insisted the Cubs take Prior back as part of the deal (straight up for Zambrano) Kevin has balls if not a firm perch from which to negotiate.

The Pirates have said Mc Clouth stays with them. However, they have a couple of Cricket players they would trade.

We may actually have a better chance in our division this year with Sabathia flying the coop.

Would not be surprised if Wood ends up at Wrigley North.

Welcome home sherm

Godspeed to CB
