30 years

Not much of a baseball rant today -- it's the Sherm's 30th wedding anniversary and we are going to celebrate like it's 1999. We're going to the Pechanga Casino and Resort for the big Wine and Chocolate Festival -- because nobody does wine and chocolate like the Indians, I suppose.

Speaking of the Indians, I admit that the whole "land for beads" thing was one-sided and unfair. I also think the Mark DeRosa trade makes us even.

30 years is a long time. And that's thirty EACH. So today we party to remember the good times, drink to forget the bad ones, and get ready for the next thirty. She told me that the first thirty was just "probation" --

We are renewing our vows tomorrow. For two weeks, I thought they said "Vowels" and had been practicing a-e-i-o-u and sometimes y. Now they tell me it's not that. So I have to go write something nice. She says if I do comedy, it'll be a short marraige this time around...so I'd better be serious. Or not. We'll see.

Any of you in the San Clemente area tomorrow afternoon...feel free to drop by...but call first so I can get you on the list. And give you directions. Or email me if you don't have the phone number.

More on baseball later. No mention of either flotsam or jetsam in the vows, I promise.

First of all, congratulations on the 30th...much love and respect to you and Mrs. Sherm. Second...thanks for the invite...TWO days notice mught have been nice. No way to get a sitter AND get to north San Diego on 12 hours notice. Makes me feel like the invite was an afterthought. Anyway, we'll raise a glass of zin to yous tonight here at home. Don't screw up the vowels. And remember...at weddings, you say "I do", not "you'll do."

Stories about my wife of thirty years:
I was watching tv when my wife sat down next to me and asked " what;s on TV" "Dust" I replied and the fight started. I told my wife to buy a $14.95 case of Miller Lite, she bought a $7.95 can of cold cream, I told her the case of beer would make her look better at night and the fight started, My wife and I were at my 30th High School reunion when I looked across the bar at a woman, "you know her?" my wife asked. "yes; it's my old girlfriend and I heard she hit the bottle hard after our breakup". Wow" my wife exclaimed, " I didn't know anyone could celebrate that long" Congrats Sherm I'm sure your marriage is roses and my best for another thirty years. Congrats Sherm.

If I were to make it that long starting today I would be 78.

So you have the record over me.

Enjoy your weekend and may the 2nd 30 around be better than the first
30

And my congrats too...to Mrs Sherm.

Hopefully you did not mess up your bowels durring the ceremony.

And thankfully there was absolutely nothing in the baseball news that would have over shadowed your aneversery. Just a dull uneventfull weekend.

I watched a 1998 Cub game yesterday in which Kerry Wood struck out 20. Stoney and Chipper were glowing about his future. The Kid's 5th ML start was the career highlight, got to be frustrationg for him.

I saw the Kerry Wood game also, I TIVO's it for future viewing. Man, did he have some stuff that day, jezz. Bagwell, Alou, Biggio looked beside themselves. Kevin Orie should have made a play on that groundball, should have been no hitter.

I really like watching those old games and hearing all the peripheral news on those broadcasts, all the old names that are gone and who was with what team at the time. They kept mentioning Wood's previous start in LA that Wood had trouble with and I was at that game.

They mentioned 'Maddux carved up' the Dodgers that day. Micky Moridini at 2b. This was the beginning of Sosa's incredible steroid induced monster year in which he hit 20 HR's in June. So Wood strikes out 20 in May and Sosa hits 20 bombs in June. Sandy Martinez behind the dish, how long did he last? Bad Mojo in left field.

Cool stuff, I dig it.

I think its time for a shermrant on the steroid debacle and how major league baseball has basically lost me and many others as fans due to the mishandling of the whole jacked up mess. Way to earn your $17 mil Bud.

The steriod debacle falls squarley on Donald Fehr and the players union. dating back to the mid 1990's any attemp Selig made to institute tougher drug testing was stonewalled by Fehr and the union.

It is the owners job to field a product it is the unions job to protect the players.

Turning a blinds eye to steroid use was financially beneficial for both the owners and the union, but it is the union that failed to protect the health of their players in lieu of protecting the players bank accounts.
